Naturopathic Doctor vs. Holistic Wellness Practitioner: What's the Difference?
Florida just changed the rules on who can call themselves a 'naturopathic doctor.' Here's what that means if you're searching for holistic health support in Tampa.

If you’ve typed “naturopathic doctor near me” or “holistic doctor Tampa” into Google recently, you might have noticed the results are a little confusing. Some are licensed medical clinics. Some are wellness coaches. Some are chiropractors who also do naturopathy. And now, thanks to a new Florida law, the term “naturopathic doctor” means something more specific than it used to.
Here’s what’s actually going on, and how to figure out which kind of support you’re looking for.
What changed in Florida
For over 60 years, Florida didn’t license naturopathic doctors at all — the state abolished naturopathic licensing back in 1959. That changed in 2026. Florida’s legislature passed SB 688, creating a new Board of Naturopathic Medicine and, for the first time in decades, a real licensing pathway for naturopathic doctors in the state.
The part that matters most if you’re searching for care: once the law takes effect on December 31, 2026, “Naturopathic Doctor” becomes a protected title. Only someone who’s completed an accredited naturopathic doctoral program, passed a national board exam, and gone through the state’s licensing process will legally be able to use it. Using the title without that license becomes a criminal offense.
That’s actually good news for you as a patient — it means the title will start to mean something consistent and verifiable, the way “MD” or “DO” already does.
So what does a licensed naturopathic doctor actually do?
Under Florida’s new law, a licensed naturopathic doctor will be trained in standard medical sciences and diagnostic tools, and authorized to diagnose and treat patients using natural therapies — things like nutrition, herbal medicine, and physical therapies — generally without the ability to prescribe most prescription drugs. It’s a genuine clinical credential, closer in structure to how a physician assistant or nurse practitioner is licensed than to a wellness coach or practitioner.
If what you need is a diagnosis, or treatment for a specific medical condition, a licensed naturopathic doctor (once the licensure process is up and running) or a conventional physician is who you want to see.
What a holistic wellness practitioner does instead
A lot of people searching “holistic doctor near me” aren’t actually looking for a diagnosis. They’re looking for someone who treats them like a whole person instead of a list of symptoms, helps them understand root causes, and doesn’t rush them through a 10-minute appointment.
That’s a different kind of support, and it doesn’t require (or claim) a medical license. At Consciously Aware, for example, we offer:
- A Functional Energy Assessment — a non-invasive session that reads where stress has settled in your body’s energy field, before it turns into bigger symptoms
- 1:1 coaching built around the nervous system, specifically for empaths and highly sensitive people
- Mind-body work like PSYCH-K®, Body Code, and Emotion Code, folded into coaching sessions, for working through emotional patterns that show up as physical overwhelm
None of this diagnoses or treats medical conditions, and it’s not a substitute for a doctor when you need one. What it is: a way to get support for the stress, overwhelm, and burnout that often don’t show up clearly on a standard medical workup, especially for people whose nervous systems are wired to feel everything a little more intensely.
How to know which one you need
A simple way to think about it: if you have a specific medical condition or need a diagnosis, start with a licensed physician or (soon) a licensed naturopathic doctor. If what you’re carrying is chronic stress, overwhelm, or a sense that something’s “off” that hasn’t shown up on a test yet, a holistic wellness practitioner can be a good next step — often alongside your existing care, not instead of it.
If you’re an empath or highly sensitive person in the Tampa area and you’re not sure which path fits, that’s exactly what a free discovery call is for.
